A provincial nomination is still the biggest single boost an Express Entry candidate can get: 600 CRS points. In 2026, though, most provincial routes favour people with a job offer, work experience or study history in that province. Several programs once open to applicants abroad without an offer have narrowed or paused. If you live in the US, a PNP works best when it fits a specific province’s current priorities.
If you are still weighing your options, our comparison of Express Entry vs PNP explains how the two systems connect. Start with our complete guide to moving to Canada from the USA for the full picture.
Table of Contents
ToggleEnhanced vs base nominations
| Type | How it works | Processing |
| Enhanced (Express Entry-linked) | Province nominates you from the Express Entry pool or through its own stream; you receive 600 CRS points | Federal Express Entry processing after the nomination |
| Base (non-Express Entry) | You apply to the province, then file a paper or online PR application with IRCC | Generally longer federal processing |

Province by province: realistic options from the US
Ontario: redesigned in 2026
Ontario overhauled the OINP in 2026. Amendments to the program’s regulation took effect on June 25, 2026. The previous streams, including the Express Entry Human Capital Priorities stream that many people abroad relied on, stopped issuing invitations. They are being replaced by a single Ontario Workforce Priority stream built around arranged employment in Ontario. For most Americans, this means an Ontario job offer is now the starting point. Follow our OINP updates for the latest selection rounds.
Saskatchewan
The SINP’s International Skilled Worker category has sub-categories that don’t need a Saskatchewan job offer: Occupations In-Demand and Saskatchewan Express Entry. They run through an Expression of Interest pool, and selections have been sparse, with no regular draws scheduled. Employer-backed routes are the more active path. Earnest has a Regina office, and our SINP page covers current streams, including the Employer Position Assessment.
Alberta
Alberta’s Express Entry stream selects candidates through targeted pathways, including a Dedicated Health Care Pathway, an Accelerated Tech Pathway and priority-sector draws. Most need a CRS of at least 300, and the Tech pathway needs Alberta employment or an eligible Alberta job offer. Our AAIP eligibility explorer post shows how to check your fit.
British Columbia
BC PNP Skills Immigration is mainly employer-driven and targets tech, healthcare and high-economic-impact roles. See the latest results, such as the June 2026 BC PNP draw.
Atlantic provinces and others
New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI run sector-targeted rounds and frequently favour candidates with local connections or priority occupations. See the New Brunswick priority occupations list and the PEI PNP June 2026 draw.
Which Americans get the most out of a PNP
- You have a job offer from an employer in a specific province. This is the strongest position in 2026.
- Your occupation is on a province’s priority list, especially healthcare, skilled trades or tech.
- Your CRS is good but below federal cut-offs, and an enhanced nomination would carry you over.
- You are willing to settle outside Toronto and Vancouver. Smaller provinces often move faster.
How to improve your odds from the US
- Keep an Express Entry profile active. Many provinces search the federal pool. Set your profile to show interest in all provinces.
- Get your NOC right. Provinces select by occupation. A wrong code makes you invisible. See finding your NOC code for a US job.
- Target an employer. Healthcare and tech employers recruit Americans directly. A job offer opens most 2026 streams.
- Track draws weekly. Provincial rounds are small and change often. Check eligibility before each round.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a provincial nomination while living in the US?
Yes, but in 2026 most active streams favour candidates with a job offer, or work or study history in the province.
Does Ontario still have the Human Capital Priorities stream?
No. Ontario’s 2026 redesign replaced its previous streams with a Workforce Priority stream centred on arranged employment in Ontario.
How many points does a nomination add?
An enhanced (Express Entry-linked) nomination adds 600 CRS points.
Which PNP is easiest for Americans?
There isn’t one easy PNP. The best fit depends on your occupation, any job offer, and where you’re willing to live.
Do provinces charge fees?
Many do, on top of federal fees. Amounts vary by province and stream.
