Yes. Americans applying through Express Entry must submit results from an IRCC-approved language test, even if English is their first language. IRCC does not exempt native speakers, and results must be less than two years old when you create your profile and when you apply for PR. The score matters a lot: language is one of the largest parts of your CRS score.

Why fluent English is not enough: CLB 9 vs CLB 10
CRS awards points per ability: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The jump from CLB 9 to CLB 10 looks small on paper but adds real points. It also affects skill-transferability points.

Minimum scores by program
- Federal Skilled Worker: CLB 7 in all four abilities
- Canadian Experience Class: CLB 7 for TEER 0–1 jobs, CLB 5 for TEER 2–3 jobs
- Federal Skilled Trades: CLB 5 speaking and listening, CLB 4 reading and writing
The minimum only gets you into the pool. Competitive CRS scores need much higher results.
French: the bonus many Americans ignore

What about Canadian citizenship later?
The rules differ for citizenship. Adults 18–54 must show English or French ability, but IRCC accepts other proof, such as completed education in English. That flexibility does not apply to Express Entry.
Where to test near Detroit and Windsor
CELPIP and IELTS both run test sessions in Windsor and the Detroit metro area. Book early, because seats fill up around peak draw periods. Earnest Immigration also runs in-person IELTS, CELPIP and PTE preparation classes in Windsor.

Do US citizens need IELTS for Canada PR?

Which test is easiest for Americans?
Many Americans prefer CELPIP-General because it is fully computer-based and uses North American English, but the best test is the one whose format suits you. All approved tests convert to the same CLB scale.
How long are my results valid?
Less than two years old, both when you create your Express Entry profile and when you submit your PR application.
Does my spouse need to take a test?
It isn’t mandatory, but your spouse’s language results can add CRS points to your profile.
Can I use IELTS Academic?
No. Express Entry accepts IELTS General Training only.
