Can You Work Remotely in Canada for a US Company?

Yes, within limits. Americans can generally enter Canada as visitors and keep working remotely for a US employer, typically for up to six months per entry, as long as they don’t enter the Canadian labour market. Since May 26, 2026, IRCC guidance asks remote workers to be ready to prove that all their income comes from outside Canada. Living in Canada longer-term requires a work permit or permanent residence.

Remote work is often the first step for Americans considering a permanent move. Our comparison of the best Canadian cities for American remote workers covers where to live. This page covers the immigration rules.

IRCC’s position on digital nomads

Canada does not have a separate digital nomad visa. It treats working remotely for a foreign employer as compatible with visitor status. Your employer and clients must be outside Canada, and you must not take Canadian jobs or serve Canadian customers.

What border officers may ask for (2026 update)

Under guidance in effect since May 26, 2026, you must show that you:

• will not enter the Canadian labour market,

• have enough money to support yourself during your stay, and

• will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.

Useful evidence includes a letter or contract from your US employer, recent US pay stubs, invoices to non-Canadian clients, US business registration or tax documents, and bank statements. Officers still have discretion, so bring more than the minimum.

When remote work becomes “work in Canada”

ScenarioLikely treatment
Salaried by a US company, US clients onlyGenerally compatible with visitor status
Freelancer with US clients, paid into a US accountGenerally compatible; keep invoices
Taking on Canadian clients or a Canadian employerWork in Canada: needs a work permit
Staying past six monthsNeeds a visitor record extension, and eventually a different status

Staying longer: from remote worker to resident

• US citizen with a Canadian job offer in a listed profession: the CUSMA Professional work permit

• Your company has a Canadian entity: an intra-company transfer

• Permanent move: the Express Entry options in Canada PR options for US citizens

Family members

A spouse or child travelling with you needs their own visitor status and cannot work or study (beyond short courses) without the right permit. See visitor visa requirements for extensions and conditions.

Taxes

Immigration status and tax residence are separate questions. Long stays, a home in Canada or family ties can create Canadian tax obligations even while you are a visitor. US citizens also keep filing US returns. Read US–Canada tax 101 and speak to a cross-border tax professional before a long stay.

Frequently asked questions

Does Canada have a digital nomad visa?

No separate visa. Remote workers for foreign employers typically enter as visitors, subject to IRCC’s conditions.

How long can I work remotely from Canada?

Typically up to six months per entry as a visitor. You can apply for a visitor record to extend, but you must keep genuine visitor status.

Can I have Canadian clients as a digital nomad?

No. Serving Canadian clients or employers is work in Canada and needs a work permit.

What should I bring to the border?

An employer letter or contracts, recent pay stubs or invoices, proof of funds, and evidence that you plan to leave at the end of your stay.

Can my spouse work while I work remotely?

Not automatically. Family members need their own status and permits.
